There’s nothing better than waking up after a good night’s sleep. You feel refreshed, energised and (sometimes) ready to take on the world – however, lots of people don’t make a peaceful night’s rest their priority. The truth is, getting a good night’s sleep is more than just feeling refreshed in the morning; it’s fundamental to our mental and physical health, and should be treated just as importantly as regular exercise or a balanced diet.
Below, we take a look at some of the benefits of getting a good night’s rest.
Almost all of us will have suffered from a sleepless night at one point or another, and many will know that a poor night’s rest can drastically affect concentration levels the following day. A bad night’s sleep can affect various aspects of brain function, from cognition and concentration to productivity and performance. Sleep deprivation and restless nights can leave people vulnerable to attention lapses and delayed reactions – not ideal if you’ve got a day of work ahead of you. To be highly productive and boost concentration levels, a good night’s sleep is key.
When we are asleep, we are resting our bodies - however, the mind is still busy working away. In fact, sleep is crucial for our minds to function correctly. When we sleep, the mind is actually processing and consolidating memories from the day – sorting them into boxes, filing them away and making sense of what we have experienced. If we don’t get enough sleep, the brain doesn’t have enough time to process our memories – not only can this lead to the mind creating false memories, but it can affect our ability to easily recall situations from the day too.
Have you ever found yourself feeling more irritable than usual, only to realise that you were tossing and turning in bed all night? A poor night’s sleep can lead to bad moods and dramatic mood shifts. If you get a good night’s rest, you wake up feeling rested and alert. Your energy levels are higher and your mood is generally more uplifted, simply because you’ve got a spring in your step. When you suffer from a restless night, your mind has to work harder the next day and your mood can feel lower due to lack of sleep.
It’s not just your mind that benefits from a good night’s sleep. When your body gets a good, peaceful night’s sleep, your immune cells also get a chance to rest – which only means that they’re ready to fight off any colds, flus or illnesses when they come their way. Sleeping problems, including sleep disorders like insomnia and sleep apnoea, can interfere with the healthy functioning of the immune system. Getting a good night’s rest helps to boost our immune system and ensure that our body is in top condition to keep us healthy.
Unfortunately, getting a good night’s sleep isn’t always the easiest of tasks. There are a number of factors that can affect our ability to sleep well, from stress levels to light exposure.
