Over the last year and a half, we’ve been using more hand soaps, sanitisers and household cleaners than ever before. While these products are effectively keeping us clean and safe, they can also wreak havoc on our hands and nails, causing our cuticles to feel dry and our nails brittle and rough.

Fortunately, with a little bit of TLC and a good nail care routine, you can ensure your nails are healthy and hydrated at all times. Whether you want to create a good nail routine as part of your self-care regime or you’re looking to restore your nail health after over-sanitising, we’ve got all the tips and tricks you need for stronger, longer nails in no time.

Be gentle with your nails

Firstly, it's important to note that you should always be gentle with your nails. This means you should avoid nail care products that contain harsh chemicals and never use invasive nail tools that could cause damage. Instead, try to treat your nails with the utmost care – avoid using them as replacement tools for can openers and try to stay away from frequent acrylic manicures.

Using polish removers, gels and acrylics on your nails can leave nails feeling dry, dehydrated and damaged – so we recommend keeping them down to a minimum. In fact, a great rule of thumb to follow is treat your nails how you treat your hair, as both are composed of keratin proteins. We all have a few rules when it comes to washing and caring for our hair; it’s a good idea to apply the same approach to your nails – keep them clean, conditioned and in good shape.

Keep them squeaky clean

Just like your skincare or hair routine, you should start with a good cleanse. Keeping your nails clean and in good condition helps keep germs at bay and reduces your risk of infection, so it’s important to begin your nail care routine with a thorough cleansing. As always, we recommend you avoid using products packed with unnatural ingredients.

Our favourite quick and easy nail cleanser routine is simple: mix one teaspoon of baking soda in a small bowl of water, and add one tablespoon of lemon juice. Simply soak your nails for 10 minutes and then gently scrub clean. Lemon water helps to get rid of nail discolouration, remove stains and brighten your nails. It’s also a rich source of Vitamin C, making it a great nail cleanser.

Don’t remove your cuticles

Despite what you may think, your cuticles are a critical part of your overall nail health. Your cuticles are there to protect your nails from infection and act as a natural barrier, preventing nails from becoming inflamed. While you may want to trim the loose skin around the sides of your nails (we always recommend doing this when your skin is wet), you should avoid getting rid of your cuticles entirely. Instead, keep them soft and moisturised. If you find they’re getting in the way of your nail polish, you can gently push them back using a rubber cuticle stick – but never cut them away entirely.

Apply a natural nail oil

Hand washing, dish washing and sanitising can strip out the natural oils from our nails, leaving them prone to breakage and splitting. To make sure your nails are getting the TLC they deserve, we recommend investing in a good nail growth serum – one packed with natural goodness to keep your nails in top condition. There are lots of benefits to using a nail oil regularly; not only does it increase blood circulation around your nails when rubbed in, but it can also improve the health and appearance of your nails too. A good nail oil forms a lightweight protective barrier over the nail for extra protection and helps to keep both nails and cuticles moisturised.
