All about Citronella

Citronella is a grass that grows in some Asian countries and some islands of the South Pacific. At Naissance, our Citronella essential oil is steam distilled from the fresh leaves of the grassy plant grown in Indonesia. Citronella is part of the Cymbopogon family which includes Lemongrass, and it takes its name from the French word meaning “lemon balm”.

Insect Repellent
Citronella is known to be an effective insect repellent, and people all across the world use it to keep the biting bugs at bay. In fact, it’s been registered as a plant-based insect repellant in the USA since 1948.
Containing volatile oils and boasting a strong, citrussy scent that irritates and repels mosquitoes in particular, Citronella helps to ward off insects without the use of harsh chemicals. It also works to repel flies, fleas and other insects.
Citronella can be used in a number of different products to repel inspects - including candles, soaps, burners and sprays. You can even mix a few drops with a carrier oil and rub onto the skin to ward off bugs while you’re out and about. We’ve shared an insect repellent spray recipe below for you to try!
Natural anti-inflammatory
Citronella oil contains powerful anti-inflammatory and pain relieving properties, and is therefore commonly used to provide relief from inflammation that causes pain. DIY Insect Repellent
Ready to ward off the bugs? Here’s our easy DIY insect repellent recipe, to ensure that you can relax in your garden or home without worrying about bugs and insects.
Ingredients
Combine all of the ingredients in a spray bottle and label. This is a bi-phase spray, so you’ll need to shake it well before use to temporarily mix the water-based ingredients with the oils (it will separate when not in use). To stay protected from bugs, you will need to reapply the spray to your skin every couple of hours as essential oils evaporate over time. Armed with your new spray, you can now enjoy the outdoors without having to worry about insects!
