Bulgaria is the home of beautiful mountains, magnificent valleys and incredibly fertile lands, creating the optimum conditions for cultivating certain plants. We’re talking about lavender and rose, of course. Bulgaria produces some of the best quality and purest rose and lavender in the world, so naturally, this is where we source our Organic Lavender and Organic Rose Otto essential oils.
Lavender is one of the most popular essential oils for aromatherapy and was in fact the oil that led to the naming of the term aromatherapy by French chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé. Famed for its soothing and relaxing properties, Lavender is probably one of the most loved essential oils. It has a distinctive floral, yet herby aroma that is instantly recognisable. Naturally calming and comforting, Lavender Oil is frequently used for its sedative properties to ease anxiety and promote sleep. The oil is produced by steam distilling the flowers and stems of the organically grown lavender plants.
Bulgaria is one of the largest producers of lavender oil in the world, thanks to the air humidity, altitude, regular rainfall and fertile soil. We source our Organic Lavender from a small cooperative of farms, who work together to grow the beautiful fragrant, purple flowers. They harvest and distil the oil themselves and the sales of the oil provides a major source of income for the entire region of Southern Bulgaria.

Incredibly popular in skincare preparations, Rose Otto is thought to be beneficial for mature, sensitive and dry skin types. Thanks to its potency, you only need the smallest amount, the recommended dilution for topical application is 0.02%. Known as the Queen of essential oils, Rose Otto is useful in times of stress with its key benefit being to soothe and calm the mind. This sensual and soothing essential oil blends with most other essential oils and has a middle/base perfumery note and has a sweet, floral, classically rose aroma.
We come to the Valley of the Roses to source our Organic Rose Otto from a family run farm and distillery. They specialise in the delicate and labour intensive job of growing and producing this luxury, precious oil. The roses only blossom for 2 months each year from early May to mid June. Nestled between two mountains, the valley provides the perfect environment and altitude for growing roses. The roses have to be harvested at the opportune time and are meticulously handpicked the day they first blossom or they will drop and cannot be used for making oil.
The petals are collected, first thing in the morning, whilst the petals are still moist with the early morning dew, before the sun gets too hot, as the oil evaporates from the petals as the temperature rises, leaving them with barely an oil content by the end of the day. It takes around 8000kg of petals to extract 1kg of Rose Oil. The best pickers can collect around 50kg of petals a day, so a whole day’s work will only produce around 6ml of oil. The incredible dedication shown by the farmers and their workers to produce the fine oil.
